99moons is building its own catalog of products and real shelf prices, collected entirely by people in real stores. Every barcode, every price, every photo comes from our collectors — we don't buy or license anyone else's data. That catalog powers Essential Visibility, our tool that helps families know what they own, what things actually cost, and when it's time to replace or resell. The more our collectors scan, the smarter it gets for everyone.
What a collector does
- Visit a store you choose — grocery, hardware, pharmacy, anywhere with barcodes.
- Scan product barcodes with your phone, right from our website. No special equipment.
- Snap two quick photos per item: the product and its shelf price label.
- Enter the shelf price. Each item takes under a minute.
What to collect
Anything with a barcode and a shelf price, in any store. If it's on a shelf, it counts. For example:
- Groceries — cereal, coffee, canned goods, snacks, drinks, spices, cleaning supplies.
- Electronics — headphones, chargers, TVs, laptops, tablets, smart speakers, gaming gear.
- Furniture & home — lamps, shelving, bedding, kitchenware, tools, patio gear.
- Health & personal care — vitamins, shampoo, toothpaste, first aid, cosmetics.
- Clothing & shoes — anything tagged with a barcode.
- Toys, pet supplies, sporting goods, auto parts — if it scans, we want it.
The rule of thumb is simple: if it has a barcode and a price tag, scan it. New items nobody has scanned before are the most valuable of all.
How it works
- Apply — name, phone, and city. That's it.
- Approval — 99moons reviews every application.
- Agreement — review and accept the collector agreement, including compensation terms.
- Practice check — submit one sample scan with photos so we can confirm quality.
- Collect — pick your own stores and scan at your own pace.
How you're scored
After each store visit you receive a scorecard based on three things:
- Accepted items — how many of your scans passed review.
- Photo quality — reviewed by a real person, not a machine.
- New finds — items nobody had scanned before.
Quality beats quantity. A careful collector always outscores a fast one.
How you're compensated
Collectors participate as independent contractors, not employees — you set your own schedule and choose your own stores. Your compensation is based on the items you collect and your visit scorecards, and the exact rates are laid out in the collector agreement you'll review and accept before your first store visit. Nothing is hidden: you see the terms before you scan a single item.
Who can join? Anyone with a smartphone who shops in U.S. stores. No experience, no resume, no special skills — if you can take a clear photo and type a price, you can be a collector.
Applications require 99moons approval, an accepted agreement, and reviewed practice before store collection.
